10 Ways to Update your Wardrobe

New year, new you! Right? Dress up isn’t just for little girls, update your work wardrobe with 10 easy tips, even the most busiest woman can handle. No need to invest in entirely new wardrobe for the new year (unless that’s how you roll), but rather invest in some key pieces that are perfect for everyday. No fuss=a must for your daily routine.

1. Purge

Okay so this is a no brainer. Get rid of items you haven’t worn in years or are too big or too small. Narrow your wardrobe down to basics, key work pieces, night out items, and pretty much anything else you NEED. Don’t turn your wardrobe into an episode of Hoarders. Donate items that are still in wearable condition. Do this for the rest of the family and you’ll be amazed at what you find!

2. Necklace

Costume jewelry is a cute and inexpensive way to dress up your outfit. Or opt for a delicate, simple necklace with a small diamond on pendant that drops right at the collar bone for a classic look. Or pull a Carrie Bradshaw and don your nameplate necklace with pride.  Dig around your jewelry chest, you never know what you may find!

3. Capped Toe Pointy Shoes

The tapered toe may have fallen off fashions radar, but it is definitely making a comeback. They have the unique ability to visually elongate the leg, especially when paired with wide-leg trousers or a sleek pencil skirt. This season metal capped toes are totally in and add an extra oomph to any outfit. Black suede heel with a metal tapered toe is the way to go.

4. Pop Lip Color

Stop hiding behind chapsticks and lip balms. Bold reds are great for any complexion, with millions of shades to match. Red is one of the most universally wearable lipstick shades, and it’s a classic way to add both impact and femininity to your look. “In general, reds that are more blue-based are flattering on all skin tones, and they make your teeth look whiter to boot,” says James Boehmer, international lead makeup stylist for NARS Cosmetics. NARS’ Red Jungle  is a great way to go!

5. Oversized style watch

Who doesn’t love an oversized watch? Even the most delicate of wrists can dawn these masculine pieces. Choose the face size based on the size of your wrist. Make sure the face isn’t taking up your entire wrist and you want it to fit nice and snug so it isn’t banging against anything.

6. Fitted Blazer

Spend a few extra dollars on a blazer that contours and fits your body perfectly. Black and navy blue are two must haves for every wardrobe. Whether you dress it up with a pencil skirt or silk slack or wear it with jeans, a fitted blazer is one of those essential wardrobe items. Bold and daring? Try a leather blazer.

7. The “It” Bag

Face it women practically live in their bags. From makeup to medicine to random items, our bags hold it all! But lets not treat them as garbage bags! A sturdy doesn’t have to be an expensive one.  Look for one that can be used as a brief case as well, like a shopper, with multiple pockets to keep you organize. Black of course is the way to go, but if you dare try a cobalt blue or a vibrant orange to add some life to any outfit.

8. Silk Pants

Nothing screams classy than a beautiful pair of silk slacks. Whether harem or skinny is your style, these are sure to be a fit in your office. Pair with pumps, flats or wedged sneakers for an edgy look. Retire your jeans and try something new! You’ll definitely be more comfortable at work.

9. Delicate studs

Delicate studs + a pulled back up do= classy chic for work or a night out. Need I say more?

10. Retro T-shirt

Remember that fitted blazer I mentioned? Well grab an old school tee with your favorite team, band or character and throw it on underneath! With a pair of skinnies and those capped toe heels, you’ll look laid back yet well put together. Oh don’t forget your oversized watch and new work bag! Accessorize according to your preference.

Who Said You Can’t Wear White This Winter?

Contrary to everyone’s beliefs, white isn’t just for the spring/summer season (though I would not suggest wearing white linen pants in the winter…just saying), but it is definitely a winter time color. I mean helloooooo, snow is white! Anyways… Stop hiding behind your LBD and stand out in white. We’ve complied 5 ways to wear white this winter that anyone can pull off, I mean just check out these celebs.

White Blazer

Remember that white blazer you coveted all summer? Bring it out of storage! A white blazer +skinny jeans (or tights) + pumps + a  flowy blouse= the perfect equation for a super chic office holiday party or night out on the town.  Try adding a white blazer over your LBD for a great contrast. Kate Moss paired her white blazer nicely with a zip detail leather pant, grey top and black stilettos.

White Dress

A cream white dress is always a good investment for the holiday season. Retire your LBD and break out your LWD (little white dress). Add red , gold, or black pumps to complete the look. Even throw on a statement necklace to dress it up a bit more. Just as with any LBD, the possibilities are endless with an LWD! Pick a length and style you feel most comfortable in and have fun styling it up. Beyonce looked amazingly chic in this cream white dress. The fit couldn’t be more perfect!

Fur Vest (Faux or Real)

Rachel Roy is totally styling in her off white fur vest. Whether you go faux or real, a white fur vest is a great statement piece that will compliment almost any outfit. Black leather leggings or skinny jeans with a shimmery sweater underneath and cute booties = a super cute day look! Not ready for a bold white? Try an off white or white mixed with tan fur.

Ivory Coat

How could you go wrong with an ivory coat? An ivory coat is very classy and can freshen up any look.It is the perfect accent to any outfit . Try to find one that hits right above the knee with beautifully embellished buttons. Don’t want a white pea coat? Try a white puffer for an Aspen inspired looked! Just remember to keep warmth in mind! Not only do shoes, bags, and accessories make an outfit an overcoat can too! Do not sacrifice comfort for fashion when it comes to a winter coat, even if it just for dinner!

White suit

Dare to go head to toe in white? Julianne Hough does this white suit the justice it deserves with a bright red lip. Though a white suit is perfect for winter, do not try to revive your white linen suit from the summer. Opt for silk instead or a material that is guaranteed to keep you warm. Maybe even go for a Chanel inspired tweed for an ultra classic look. Pair with metallic pumps and a bold lip and you’re set!

How To: Shellac Nails at Home

$40 for a gel manicure every two to three can get costly pretty quickly! Unless you’re going on vacation or have a super important event coming up, there’s no need to break the wallet. And of course spending money on a regular manicure gets pretty annoying when it only lasts a week, especially with kids! Enough with the rant, here’s an easy, at home shellac manicure (no UV light required) that anyone can do!

  1. Give yourself a relaxing manicure! Crank up the tunes, light some incense or candles and clip, file, and buff away!
  2. To ensure your nails are fully dry, run over each one with a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover.
  3. Gently buff your nails, so they are slightly rough (not too rough!). Apply one coat of the 3 way glaze to each nail.
  4. Apply two coats (or three depending on the shear-ness of the color).
  5. Apply one coat of the Sephora by OPI UV Effects polish to each nail and let dry.

Voila! You’ve got yourself your very own shellac manicure!

T-Shirt Tie Dyeing

Tie dyeing is such a classic craft. It is fun for kids and takes parents on a trip down memory lane to when they were kids doing this same craft with their parents. It’s so simple and everyone will have a blast getting messy with all the colors. The best part is seeing the beautiful outcome and excitement on your child’s face when they see what they created. This version of tie dyeing comes from Kaboose, but there are many alternatives to this craft. Leave a comment to share your experience and secrets to tie dyeing!

To Wear or Not to Wear: Slouchy Pants

Huge trend alert: slouchy pants. They are wider at the hips and taper on the way down to the ankles. Personally, I can get on board with this style because it looks so comfortable and you can dress it up with a black blazer, white tee, pumps and tons of accessories or dress down with flats, fitted tank and a cardigan. Wear to work or to run errands. They also come in a variety of colors; muted neutrals to flashy neons.
