Buy Red, Fight AIDS

Tomorrow, December 1, marks World AIDS Day, a time of remembrance and a call to action against HIV and AIDS. The support for those affected by HIV/AIDS is absolutely essential: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 11,200 women were infected with HIV in 2009 alone.

Even if you don’t have tons of cash to donate to the fight, there are small ways you can incorporate HIV/AIDS awareness into your everyday life. Here are 5 products available now from companies that will donate at least a portion, if not all, of sales profits to making HIV and AIDS history!

Viva Glam lipstick ($14.50,

Every single penny earned from the sale of this gorgeous gloss will be handed over to the MAC AIDS Fund, which provides lifesaving care for men, women, and children living with HIV or AIDS.

Anchored in Hope (PRODUCT) RED t-shirt ($24.95,

Here’s another reason to treat yourself to a trendy new tee: 50% of the profits from each shirt sold will be donated to the Global Fund, a non-profit dedicated to fighting AIDS in Africa.

(Feed) Red Love 30 bag ($80,

We know you’re constantly lugging around your kids’ playthings on top of that over-sized beauty bag. So, why not invest in a sturdy yet stylish tote that will give women and children burdened with HIV/AIDS the treatment they need to stay alive? For each purchase of this special edition bag, FEED will give $12 to the Global Fund and $10 to the World Food Programme (WFP).

(STARBUCKS)RED card (price varies,

This year, Starbucks and designer Jonathan Adler teamed up to create a limited-edition gift card that will benefit the Global Fund each time you buy that morning cup of Joe. To date, the company has already garnered enough cash to fund 18 million daily doses of medicine for Africans living with HIV/AIDS. This will last until December 31, 2011, so start swiping!

Bugaboo products (prices vary,

Tote your precious tot around in a stylish Bugaboo stroller. Not only will you be one haute mama, but you’ll also be quite the do-gooder: 1% of the company’s revenue will go to the Global Fund to care for HIV-positive women and children in Africa.

How to: Keep Your Lips Luscious This Winter

‘Tis the season for dry, achy pouts. Painfully chapped lips may have been the norm during winters past, but enough is enough! Kiss-killing cracks have overstayed their welcome and this year, we refuse to play nice. Here are five easy ways to bid your dried out lips farewell!

1. Make Shea butter and beeswax your new BFFs. They’ll protect your sensitive lips against frigid winds and bitter chills, so you can pucker up for the hubby later on.

2. Always go for glosses with SPF. Ladies, we know those rays are looking harmless right about now. But sunny —and even not so bright—skies can still do some serious harm to your pout, no matter how frosty you’re feeling. Repeatedly exposing your mouth to the sun’s harmful UV rays can result in labial lentigo, an unattractive brown spot on the lower lip that can prove almost impossible to cover up.

3. Skip flavored balms. According to Dr. Lawrence E. Gibson, gals who go for flavored balms or glosses are more likely to lick their lips (after all, who can resist a tempting cherry flavor?). But saliva can end up drying out your pout —defeating the purpose of slathering on that balm in the first place.

4. Breathe through your nose! Dr. Gibson also reported that when you suck in fresh air through your mouth, you’re drying out your lips in the process! So, invest in some fluffy tissues and make sure you put those nostrils to work.

5. Take care of yourself. We know you’d never let your precious little one out into the cold without a toasty scarf and coat! While you’re spending your time and energy making sure the kids get enough hydrating water and cold-weather gear, it can be all too easy to neglect your own needs. So, be sure to set aside a few minutes each day to gulp down fresh water and wrap a scarf around your mouth before leaving the house. Your lips will thank you by staying soft all season long!

Schoolbags for Kids Giveaway

Totsy is doing it again with another giveaway! This time with a company that has a mission statement of giving back.  Read more about Schoolbag for Kids from co-founder, Kalon Gutierrez.  Then enter for your chance to win a RED Schoolbag for Kids! It will make a great gift!

  1. Kalon, you and co-founder, Luis Garcia, left global empires such as L’Oreal, Sephora, Ralph Lauren and Bobbi Brown.  What inspired you two to start a company from the ground up? Though very excited about the luxury brands we worked with, we realized that our ultimate dream was to one day build our own company— one that had strong purpose and a clear social mission.  We also found that the type of brand we wanted to build did not exist in the marketplace; it had to be developed organically from the ground up.
  2. Briefly explain the One here. One there.™ mission.  With every schoolbag purchase, we will donate a schoolbag with supplies to a kid in need.  One here.  One there.™
  3. Why schoolbags? In 2010, Luis decided to take a career break and embark on a far-reaching adventure that carried him to the corners of the earth, including Tanzania, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Ecuador. He volunteered at many orphanages and schools, teaching kids and seeking to understand their everyday lives.  While passing out pencils to Tanzanian school children, Luis was reminded of an ancient proverb: “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” The saying played over and over in Luis’ mind as he tried to figure out how to empower these kids to create their own futures. Suddenly, Luis had the answer. He realized that in every country the children had fishing instructors (their school teachers) and fishing poles (their school), but they didn’t have any bait … they lacked schoolbags and supplies!

Al Fresco With Autumn: Turkey Tetrazzini

/* Style Definitions */
{mso-style-name:”Table Normal”;
mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;

Hey Turkey lovers – I have a confession to make. I did not invent this recipe – it was shared with me a while back from a dear friend who is an amazing chef and also runs our family restaurant. So this dish has got clout, and besides, someone somewhere has probably done it all before, right? So now, I’m sharing it with you all. Tetrazzini is a simple way to make use of that leftover Turkey that many American households have on this day, and it’s so darn delicious. Leaving you more time to hang with the kids, shop – and be thankful for all the awesomeness in your life.

Turkey Tetrazzini

  • 1-2 cloves garlic – crushed

  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • ½ cup fresh carrots – cubed

This Thanksgiving, We Remind Ourselves How Lucky We Are

I would like to thank the readers at Madame Deals for sharing their amazing ideas for holiday traditions. I asked the question, “What does everyone do for Thanksgiving?” I love to create special memories with my family.

I decided this year, we are going to trace the hands of the children on a white tablecloth and then we are going to write what they are thankful for. We will make their hands each year and fill in what they are thankful for, and as the family grows, new hands will cover the table. We are looking forward to using this tablecloth for each holiday that we gather together.

Here are some lovely ideas that I gathered from my fans on Madame Deals.

  • The overwhelming response was to sit around and eat as a family and say what you are thankful for.
  • There was also a huge amount of responses about enjoying the football game and having time to remember those who are no longer with us.
  • We all cook and eat together. We bring potluck dishes and make warm memories. We embrace the day and those we love. We gather near and far to be thankful for who we are and what we have been blessed with.
  • I especially liked the responses that had crafts for the children. There were hand print turkey place card holders. We had turkey cookies made out of Oreos. I love when my children recite our favorite poem, “A turkey is a funny bird.. its head goes wobble, wobble, wobble..a turkey only knows one word gobble, gobble, gobble.” It also seems that we begin to plan as a family for the next season.
  • We have holiday decor that comes out. We have carols that are begun to be sung. We have sales that we plan to go to. We have family games to attend and memories to make. We have trees to put up and packages to wrap with love.

The theme is the same where ever you go and whomever you are. I would also like to encourage everyone this holiday to grant a wish. It does not take money to make a difference —it only takes heart. We all have something to share and something to give. We have something that makes us special and makes us worthy. We have the ability to love and care. We have the duty and responsibility to help those in need and to be helped if we are in need. We have traditions to create and plates to clean, but most importantly we need to take a moment to remind ourselves how lucky we are.
