Mom-to-be Style Must Haves

You just found out you’re pregnant!  Congratulations!  Now, on to more important matters – what on earth are you going to wear for the next 9 months???  That’s a question that plagues every mom-to-be I’ve ever met.  The good news is that it doesn’t have to be dreadful.  In fact, it can be fun and a great excuse to shop!

Aside from taking good care of your body with healthy eating and exercise, you’re still a woman and you want to look fantastic during your pregnancy.  Check out these fashion trends to help you feel like one hot mama.

Maternity skinny jeans: Don’t knock ‘em till you try ‘em.  Skinny jeans today can feel like leggings and they call attention to some of your best assets – those legs!  Pair them with a loose v-neck tee, a tailored blazer and flats for a day-time look or add stilettos and a print tunic top for a nighttime look.  When buying maternity skinny jeans, make sure the material stretches for maximum comfort.

Leggings:  Everybody’s wearing leggings today and while you’re pregnant, it’s the perfect chance to jump on this bandwagon!  Leggings are versatile and oh-so comfortable.  Pair them with a long sweater or “cardi-coat” and flats or a pair them with a crisp white button-down and boots.  There is no need to stick to basic black.  Try velvet leggings and print leggings – like leopard.  Just remember that when trying different prints, you should keep the remainder of your outfit neutral.

Dresses:  Show off your favorite assets. If it’s your legs, go short with your dress, or if it’s your arms, go for sleeveless – that way you call attention to something other than your belly and still feel like your old self, too!

Wrap dresses:  Perfect for date nights or a night out on the town.  They also make the perfect LBD.  Pick a dress that will hit 2” above the knees and pair with black pumps and chandelier earrings and you’ll be ready for a night out.  If you’re feeling adventurous, go for leopard pumps or metallic (gold or silver) strappy stilettos.  Pair that with statement earrings in matching gold or silver shade.  Wrap dresses with prints are perfect for work or a lunch date.  Wear them with flats and a blazer.

Maxi dresses:  This dress will take you from spring to fall.  A solid-colored dress is versatile for those seasons.  Pair them with statement jewelry that will brighten your overall look.  If nights get chilly, pair your dress with a light cardigan.  Gladiator sandals and metallic-toned sandals look great with maxi dresses.  (Just a side note, maxi dresses are supposed to run very long, if you’re petite, take it to your tailored to get hemmed.  The hem of the dress should hit your ankles.)

Feminine dresses:  Most women feel their most feminine when pregnant.  Wear dresses with flower prints, ruffles, and flowing fabrics.  Pair them with flats or sandals in the spring and summer.  When heading into fall, you can pair the dress with a trench coat or blazer and knee-high riding boots and leggings or tights.

Being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to change your entire look.  Your pregnancy should reflect whatever your style was before the bump but have fun with it!  You’re pregnant glow will undoubtedly be your best accessory.

How To: Personalize Your Home

Make your home yours.  Your home should reflect your personality and/or your history and there are many ways you can give your home an authentic feel.  Check out some of our tips below on how to personalize your own home.

Framed photographs are a great way to accent your home and give it that personalized feel.  For a simple, clean look, try using simple black frames or frameless photo frames.  You can hang sepia or black and white photographs to keep the entire look simple.  If you like frames with a lot of intricate details, try a variety of different frames and hang them in a grouping in one section of the room.  This will give the room a cozy feel.  If you have children, hanging framed artwork is a great way to display your child’s creative talents as well as make a great conversation starter.  For more tips on hanging pictures, visit:

  • Frames with intricate details grouped together on one side of the room creates a cozy and artsy feel
  • Frame children’s artwork in a simple photo frame so it does not draw attention away from your child’s masterpiece

Ceramic bowls, vases and other pottery items are another great way to add more personality to your home.  Ceramic bowls (or any kind of large decorative bowl) are great as a centerpiece for coffee tables, dining room tables as well as the kitchen countertop.  They’re also useful pieces of art as they can hold fruits or a collection of snacks for guests.  Try visiting your local pottery store for pieces by local artists.  They’ll see their work being displayed and feel proud, while at the same time, it adds an interesting touch to your home.  Vases can be filled with fresh flowers, silk flowers or left alone as a piece of art all its own.  Find a vase that fits the rest of the décor in your home.  If you have earth-toned furniture and classical tastes, get a simple, unobtrusive vase.  If you have a home with furniture that contains antiques and detailing from a certain time period, get a vase that will coincide with the rest of your furniture.

  • Support local artists by buying local pottery items
  • Children’s clay artwork make great pieces on a shelf or mantle
  • Pottery pieces should coincide with theme of your room

Books are also a great home decorating accessory.  There’s a reason the term “coffee table book” was created.  One interior designer uses large coffee table books stacked high next to a reading chair because it “looks casual and warm”.  Like a framed picture of your child’s artwork, coffee table books are also great conversation starters.  They are usually a large book containing a lot of photographs and illustrations.  Having a bookshelf with a variety of different books in your living room, home office or den can create a quaint and cozy room.

  • Different genres of coffee table books will surely satisfy all kinds guests
  • Cover one wall of your room with a floor-to-ceiling bookcase and fill it with a variety of books

Rugs and accent pillows/throws are another great way to personalize your home.  They also add a comforting touch to your room.  Go with rugs that fit into the color scheme of your room. Choose easy-to-clean and warm fabrics such as cotton or flannel.  With accent pillows, make sure there is a pillow cover so that it is easy to wash when Fido or Little Ben has an accident.

  • If your room is filled with neutral colors, accent pillows and throws can be colorful – try deep, rich colors like burgundy or navy blue
  • A good rule of thumb for selecting the colors of your throw pillows is to match the color scheme of your décor. If you have one or two main colors in your color scheme, you can buy throw pillows in both colors or choose one color to highlight as an accent.

Lastly, you should have fun when decorating your home.  It shouldn’t feel like a chore.  Be creative and just keep these few simple tips in mind and you’ll have your home reflecting your own personal style in no time.  Enjoy!

Meet Carley: Our Mom of the Week!!

Congratulations to our Mom of the Week: Carley!!!  Carley has a nine-month-old daughter named Hailey. She is an ARMY veteran who served overseas and is now unable to work due to her disabilities.  She’s a stay-at-home mommy who attends night school so that she can get a better job to support her daughter, who is her world.

Carley, we at Totsy would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your sacrifice and service to our country.

Now, let’s meet Carley!

1.  What’s one thing you can’t live without (besides your family)?  If there were one thing I couldn’t live without, besides my family, it would have to be my computer. I can do everything on it, and keep in touch with all my family and friends I have made around the world.
2. What’s your favorite beauty item of all time?  My favorite beauty item of all time would have to be lip gloss, its simple, yet it can make me feel like I put some effort into my look.
3. What’s your fashion go-to item?  I don’t really have a go-to fashion item, I am more the jeans ’ and tee shirt type. It’s easy to put on as I’m dashing to the door, because I am late for another appointment.
4. What’s been your favorite trend of all?  Favorite trend of all time, wow, that’s a hard one. I change my mind so much, but for right now, it is going to have to be zebra print. Hailey’s room is entirely done in zebra print. I don’t think people should wear it, but as an accessory I love, love, love it!
5. What’s been one fashion/beauty item you’ll never touch?  And Why?  One beauty item I will never touch is false eyelashes. They scare me, I don’t even know how the lady’s put them on. Mascara is enough for me, and even that it a little nerve racking.
6. TV show you must tune into each week?  Before I had Hailey my favorite show would have had to been Ellen, now it seems as if all I watch is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I also really enjoy Parenthood, i still get to watch that because Hailey is asleep.
7. Website you absolutely must check out daily?  I am addicted to Facebook, I will admit it. I go on it constantly, however I refuse to put the application on my phone. It is how I keep in touch with all my family in New York, and Southern California.
