How To: Choose Age Appropriate Gifts

Trying to find the perfect gift this holiday season? Are you shopping for young children? You want to find something age appropriate, entertaining but most importantly – SAFE. When purchasing gifts for small children, here are some tips to consider:

  1.  How old is the child? • Children ages 3 and under are prone to choking on smaller toys, so bigger toys are recommended. Make sure it is bigger then the size of their mouths.
  2. How well is the toy constructed? • All toys are different, make sure their constructed in a way that ensures safety measures have been taken. Kids can be rough on toys and you want to make sure the toy can withstand a ‘beating.’ Stuffed animals may be an appropriate size but ask yourself – does it have eyes or a nose that could potentially be pulled or popped off and cause a chocking hazard?
  3. Is the toy larger than the child’s mouth? • The bigger the toy the less likely it will fit in a child’s mouth. That’s not to say kids won’t try but it eliminates the risk. Instead of LEGOS or matchbox cars; dolls, stuffed animals and books may be a better choice.
  4. What is the recommended age of the product? • U.S. safety standards require toys to have a recommended age that will best enjoy the product. Although you can buy a toy recommended ages 2-5 years for a 6 year old, put this into consideration when purchasing for a 1 year old.

TOTSY Closes $5 Million Series A Funding

Financing from DFJ Gotham and Rho Ventures will support expansion and solidify TOTSY’s leadership in online private sales for parents, babies and kids

PR Newswire

NEW YORK, Nov. 30, 2010

NEW YORK, Nov. 30, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — TOTSY (http://www.totsy.com), the private sale site exclusively dedicated to delivering deals on coveted must-haves for moms and children, announced today the close of its Series A round of financing. The $5 million round was led by DFJ Gotham and Rho Ventures.

Within just one year of launch, TOTSY has emerged as the dominant player serving the moms, babies and kids verticals in the online private sales. TOTSY’s strong performance and speedy customer acquisition exemplify high demand for its offering and verify that parents are eager to purchase top quality products for the family through the increasingly popular private sale model. Influential venture capital firms DFJ Gotham and Rho Ventures are backing TOTSY to fuel continued expansion of market share. The Series A follows TOTSY’s recent acquisition of competitor bTrendie’s member base, which secured TOTSY as the leading private sale site dedicated to kids and parents in the U.S.

“As the private sale channel continues to transform the retail industry, TOTSY has demonstrated its leadership in the children’s products category,” commented Danny Schultz, Managing Director at DFJ Gotham Ventures and a member of TOTSY’s Board of Directors. “TOTSY has generated tremendous customer growth since its inception, a testament to the team’s expertise and their innovative offering for both brands and TOTSY’s loyal customers.  We look forward to helping them accelerate their growth and dominate the space.”

The private sale site category has achieved striking success in the US and globally in recent years, with leading domestic players such as Gilt Groupe (http://www.gilt.com) and Rue La La (http://www.ruelala.com) collectively expected to bring in over $600 million in 2010. Vente-Privee (http://www.vente-privee.com), category originator and French private sale site launched in 2001, is rumored to have posted nearly $1 billion in gross global sales in 2009.

“The parent market in the U.S. has been growing steadily over recent years and offers one of the most powerful growth opportunities for the retail industry. Our sales and vendor sentiment at the recent ABC Kids Expo overwhelmingly confirm that TOTSY’s online private sale distribution channel answers an urgent need for both our partner brands and American families. This funding will help us to meet this demand as quickly as possible,” commented Guillaume Gauthereau, Co-founder and CEO of TOTSY.

Christophe Garnier, Co-founder, President and CMO of TOTSY states, “We welcome the addition of such respected investors to our team and look forward to applying this financing to develop and execute strategic deals that will continue to drive TOTSY’s rapid growth.”

Thanksgiving is here and you better believe this Georgia girl is going to be doing some good eatin’! One thing us southerners are known for is our good southern home cookin’ and my family is no exception. I was born into a family of fabulous home cooks with delicious (and simple) recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation.

At our Thanksgiving table you’ll find a huge turkey, cornbread dressing and gravy, sweet potato casserole, squash casserole, asparagus casserole, homemade cranberry sauce (not anything like the canned stuff!), and plenty of pecan pie! I can hear my stomach growling already! Around our table you’ll see four generations of my family plus my in-laws. A total of 13 people and enough food to feed an army!

My grandma still cooks the meal, although my mom will go to stay with her and help her prepare it. Grandma doesn’t really allow anyone to help though, just watch her and keep her company! She will let my mom make the sweet potato casserole, it is what she’s famous for, and my father-in-law will make the pecan pies the night before at my house before we drive up to join the rest of my family.

My favorite part of the meal? Definitely the squash casserole. You can get my family’s recipe on my blog here: http://wholesomemommy.com/squash-casserole/

I could eat my weight in it! Although, isn’t that what Thanksgiving is for… to stuff yourself like a turkey?

HOW-TO: Organize Your Purse

HOW-TO: Organize Your Purse With holiday shopping gearing up we need to stay organized, Ladies! Lists are a good idea for gift shopping but what about your purse?

Purses….the essences of all accessories – in my opinion 😉 need to stay organized so not to loose or misplace anything in the hustle & bustle of shopping madness.

Some tips to stay organized during Black Friday and Holiday Shopping:

· Have a place for everything in your purse – extra pockets are great!

o Make sure your cell phones stays in its holder, keys have a pocket or keychain clip in your purses.

· Makeup bags are an easy way to keep organized, I have an extra bag in my purse to keep a mirror, pens, hand-sanitizer, and any other miscellaneous items. This way when you are looking for something in your bag, you know where it will be and not scattered in the abyss!

· During shopping trips the one thing you need more than anything else is your wallet. To minimize ciaos…make sure all credit cards you need are in your wallet and visible. When your wallet is organized it eliminates the stress of potentially loosing a credit card or misplacing money.

Avoid this!! Looks of organizing compartments 😉

· Finally, my last tip for Holiday Shopping – get a receipt organizer!

o Instead of cramming receipts into your wallet or loosely in your purse, purchase a receipt carrier so when something needs to be returned or exchanged you know exactly where you placed that receipt!

Will you be out & about on Black Friday?

Happy Shopping!!
